The Somali Association for Sustainable Development Organization (SASDO) expresses deep concern over the rapidly worsening humanitarian situation in Burhakaba District, where prolonged drought, food insecurity, and displacement are severely affecting vulnerable communities.
Thousands of households are currently facing critical shortages of clean water, food, healthcare services, and adequate shelter. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities are among the most affected, with many struggling to meet their basic daily needs due to limited humanitarian assistance and increasing pressure on scarce resources.
The situation is particularly severe for children, pregnant and lactating women, older persons, and persons with disabilities, who face heightened protection risks and limited access to essential services. Many families are adopting negative coping strategies, including reducing meal frequency and prioritizing immediate survival over long-term wellbeing.
Access to safe drinking water remains one of the most urgent challenges, with communities relying on unsafe or distant water sources. Health facilities are overstretched and lack essential supplies, while livelihoods continue to deteriorate due to climate shocks and environmental stress.
Urgent Call for Humanitarian Action
SASDO calls on humanitarian partners, donors, and relevant authorities to urgently scale up coordinated response efforts to prevent further deterioration of the crisis.
Priority interventions include:
– Emergency food assistance
– Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services
– Health support and medical supplies
– Protection services for vulnerable groups
– Emergency shelter assistance
“The humanitarian situation in Burhakaba is deteriorating at a dangerous pace. Without urgent and sustained support, vulnerable families will face even greater risks in the coming weeks,” said a SASDO spokesperson.
Despite ongoing efforts by local actors and humanitarian partners, significant funding and capacity gaps continue to limit the delivery of life-saving assistance.
SASDO urges strengthened collaboration, increased resource mobilization, and timely response to ensure aid reaches the most affected communities in Burhakaba District.
